Whilst mega rarities turned up just outside Wales it looks like we will have to wait for our own. A Spoonbill was NWR (Gwent) on 8-14th and a GLOSSY IBIS on 6-31st. A CATTLE EGRET was at the NWC (Carmarthen) on 22nd, two were at Newport (Pembrokeshire) on 28th. Great Egrets were seen at several locations and there were several reports of Quail from across Wales.
A Velvet Scoter was a good July record off Rhos on Sea (Caernarfonshire) on 7th and several thousand Common Scoter arrived back offshore over 7-8th during calm conditions. An early Great Northern Diver was off Mumbles Head (Gower) on 7th. Two Black-necked Grebes were on Lisvane Reservoir (Glamorgan) on 3rd.
Two CORY’S SHEARWATERS were off Strumble on 28th and a Balearic Shearwater was off Point Lynas (Anglesey) on 6th. A Roseate Tern was at Cemlyn on 6th-16th and two on there over 25-28th. A Little Gull was at Llandegfedd Reservoir (Gwent) on 7th. 27 Storm Petrels were trapped and ringed on Bardsey on 21st and 4 were ringed at Lynas (Anglesey) on 31st.
Wood Sandpipers were at Llanillid Open Cast Working (Glamorgan) on 16th, Gann Estuary on 28th and Tregaron Bog Ceredigion on 29th and RSPB Conwy on 31st.
ROSY STARLINGS were at Trefeithna (Powys) on 1st, Berea (Pembrokeshire) on 4th, Bury Port (Carmarthen) on, Cymystradlyn (Caernarfon) over 19-21st, Cemaes (Anglesey) on 28th. A BEE-EATER was heard over Dolgarrog (Caernarfonshire) flying south on 12th.
A RED BACKED SHRIKE was at St Ann’s Head (Pembrokeshire) on 11th and a MELODIOUS WARBLER was on Bardsey on 30th.
