WOS attended the RWAS Smallholding and Countryside Festival held in Llanelwedd over the weekend of 21st-22nd May. This was the first time the show had been held since the pandemic and WOS did our best to fly the flag for birds in Wales. The eye-catching photographs of Pied Flycatcher and Curlew drew people to the stand, many keen to share stories of nesting Pied Flycatchers in their gardens. Members of the farming community who spoke to us were overwhelmingly supportive of efforts to protect breeding Curlew, although most reported fewer if any nesting birds – it was reassuring to hear that local farmers with nesting birds have engaged with Gylfinir Cymru. This was the first time that WOS had attended the show, as well as keen birdwatchers it was good to have the opportunity to meet people who have started to engage with nature, and birds in particular, in the wake of the Covid pandemic. We hope to see them at the annual Conference in November!
