We are in the midst of a nature and climate emergency. Significant and ongoing changes in the way
we manage our land for agriculture, and the ongoing effects of climate change are having the
biggest impacts on our wildlife. 1 in 6 species are at risk of extinction in Wales. With 90% of land in
Wales being farmed, farming plays a significant role in the future of nature recovery. Current farm
subsidies don’t work for farmers, for people or for wildlife, so WOS and RSPB Cyru are calling for a change. We’re
calling for a scheme that uses public money to help farmers produce food sustainably, restore
nature and tackle climate change. It must support them to manage the right mix of habitats across
at least 10% of their enclosed land and reward them fairly for doing so. If the scheme is to deliver
the type of changes we all need, it’s vital that the Welsh Government works closely with the
agriculture and environment sector to ensure that it is both popular and effective. The new Sustainable Farming Scheme is our best opportunity to ensure farmers are fairly rewarded and supported for helping nature thrive. It could also help farmers produce food sustainably for future generations and provide wider environmental benefits for society, as well as tackle climate change and now that the Agriculture Bill is law we need all your support to influence the Welsh Rural Affairs Minister, Lesley Griffiths AM to produce a scheme which is workable and benefits all stakeholders – not least the birds of Wales.
