Cuckoo update: Daniel possibly still in Chad and JAC has crossed into the Democratic Republic of Congo

Tagged on June 1, JAC joins eleven other Cuckoos on a mission to help save their kind. JAC  left Denbighshire around 18 June and having made it across the Sahara has now moved down through Cameroon to the Congo rainforest, where he was reported on 11 October. The latest update on 2 November shows that he’s now crossed the Congo river and is in the DRC.

The photo illustrating this post is probably not JAC – this male was pictured by Dys Griffiths near Brenig on 7th May 2021.

See the link here for more news of JAC and other BTO-tagged Cuckoos.

A second Cuckoo, Daniel, was tagged at Lake Vyrnwy in early June. He took the more common route south-east through eastern France and then spent several weeks in Italy, just outside Milan. On 10  August he started moving rapidly south, over Sardinia and by 13 August had reached north-east Niger, south of the Sahara. Having travelled through Mali and Niger and skirted Nigeria, he reached Chad by the beginning of September. There has been no report since then and we hope he is still OK. Follow his progress here
