WOS runs an annual bird photograph competition, which is open to members and non-members alike. For 2025 there are three categories: a Main section, open to all, a Mobile phone section, also open to all, and a Young Photographers section, open to photographers who are 21 years or younger on the closing date. There are three main prizes in each section: four shortlisting judges select a combined shortlist, with Iolo Williams, WOS President, making the final awards from the shortlisted selections. Prizes are presented at the WOS Annual Conference and a selection of the winning photographs are put together in an annual WOS calendar.

In order to be eligible, all photographs must have been taken in Wales during the time period of the competition. Details of the current competition, the entry rules and entry forms can be downloaded from the Current Competition – 2025.
