What are the benefits of joining WOS?
The Welsh Ornithological Society takes action:
- To raise the profile of bird conservation in Wales through publications, social media and our website.
- To engage with Natural Resources Wales and the Welsh Assembly to improve the protection of birds, conservation and restoration of habitats to improve biodiversity in Wales.
- To support research into birds in Wales through surveys, awards and small grants to members.
- To support Curlew Cymru, as a founding partner and funder of the group and to support Curlew research by the BTO and other organisations.
- As a partner of BirdTrack to encourage the recording of all species across Wales.
- To publish three issues of the journal Milvus each year: (1) original research; (2) annual report on scarce and rare birds in Wales (available only to members); (3) the annual Welsh Bird Report.
- Quarterly newslettersfor all members.
- WOS has just published a new comprehensive book ‘The Birds of Wales’ which draws on records from its members and has been voted one of the top 10 bird books of the year by the BTO and British Birds judging panel.
Standard membership
As a member of the Welsh Ornithological Society you will support the only organisation dedicated solely to the study and conservation of birds in Wales.
As an individual / family member you will:
- Receive our journal Milvus (formerly Birds in Wales), which contains papers on ground-breaking science into birds in Wales.
- Receive a printed copy of the annual Welsh Bird Report.
- Receive a quarterly e-newsletter with information on conservation issues concerning birds in Wales.
- Have priority booking for our Annual Conference which brings together ornithologists from across Wales and further afield at the only conference in Wales which features presentations on research and studies of birds in the country.
- Members are also entitled to a discounted conference fee.
- Have access to small grants from WOS.
- Have online access to the annual report on Scarce and Rare Birds in Wales – only available to members.
- Membership costs only £25 for one year and covers up to two people at one address.

Young Birder membership
(available to individuals up to the age of 25)
As a Young Birder member of the Welsh Ornithological Society you will support the only organisation dedicated solely to the study and conservation of birds in Wales.
The Welsh Ornithological Society takes action:
- To raise the profile of bird conservation in Wales through publications, social media and our website.
- To engage with the Welsh Assembly to improve the protection of birds in Wales; for example by restricting licences to control fish-eating birds through a stricter regime based on reliable evidence.
- To support research through awards and small grants.
- To support Curlew Cymru, as a founding partner and funder of the group, giving this declining species a future.
- WOS has just published a new comprehensive book ‘The Birds of Wales’, which draws on records from its members and has been voted one of the top 10 bird books of the year by the BTO and British Birds judging panel.
As a Young Birder member you will:
- Have online access to our journal Milvus (formerly Birds in Wales), which contains papers on ground-breaking science into birds in Wales.
- Have online access to the annual Welsh Bird Report.
- Have online access to the annual report on Scarce and Rare Birds in Wales – only available to members.
- Receive a quarterly e-newsletter with news and information on current issues concerning birds in Wales.
- Have priority booking for our Annual Conference, which brings together ornithologists from across Wales and further afield at the only all-Wales conference which features presentations on research and studies of birds in the country, together with a limited number of heavily discounted places at the conference.
- Have access to small grants and Young Persons’ Bursaries.
- Membership costs only £10 per year, up to the age when you reach 25.

Support WOS through your company by signing up to join WOS as a Corporate Member
Your company can help support the work of the Welsh Ornithological Society by becoming a Corporate Member.
As well as supporting the conservation of birds in Wales (through our small grant scheme, for example), corporate members receive many benefits, including access to the latest research and information on distribution of birds in Wales, information on current conservation priorities and the chance to show publicly your company’s support for bird conservation in Wales.

- Discount on attendance at the Society’s Annual Conference. These popular conferences move around Wales and are held each year in November with a themed topic reporting the latest work on bird research.
