Scarce and rare birds in Wales – September 2018

This summary is compiled for birdsin.wales by Robin Sandham. Records featured are subject to acceptance by the British Birds Rarities Committee (purple) and the Welsh Records Panel (blue), where relevant.

The queen KING EIDER was still on the Dovey from Aberdovey on 25-26th.

A Black-necked Grebe was on Llandegfedd Reservoir on 1st and in Cardiff Bay on 11-29th. A PALLID HARRIER on the Dee was reported from Shotton (Flints) on 5-6th, a potential 2nd county record and in consecutive years. A CORNCRAKE was on Bardsey on 16th photographed sheltering in a crevice on the hillside along with another seen there on 29th. Two SPOTTED CRAKES were at Shotton (Flintshire) on 6th and another was at RSPB Conwy on 22nd.

CATTLE EGRETS were at the NWC on 15th, Ynyslas on 16-25th and at Dingetow (Gwent) on 18th. A GLOSSY IBIS was at Sandy Haven (Pembrokeshire) on 24th.

Three BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS were at Dale Airfield on 22-24th and one on Skokholm on 27th

Two juvenile BAIRD’S SANDPIPERS were on the Gann Estuary on 13-16th.

PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were at the NWC (Carmarthen) on 15-16th, Skomer on 17th and Cors Ddyga on 29th.

Grey Phalaropes were on Skomer, NWR (Gwent) and the Ogmore Estuary (Glamorgan) on 21st, at Ynys Hir, Aberystwyth and off East Aberthaw on 22nd, Pwllheli 20-29th, two at Llanrhystyd 22-23rd with one unfortunately meeting its end with a bird of prey. One was at Lisvane Reservoir (Glamorgan) on 21-23rd and another at Kidwelly on 29th.

A RED-NECKED PHALAROPE was at Ynys Hir on 29th.

A GREAT SHEARWATER was off Bardsey on 14th. Sabine’s Gulls were reported from Cemlyn on 3rd, Point Lynas on 12th, Strumble on 11th and 14th and Bardsey on 22nd. A Black Tern was off Bardsey on 10th. Sooty Shearwaters were reported off Skokholm on 8th, Stumble on 17th and Cemlyn on 21st. Long-tailed Skuas were off Bardsey and Mwnt (Ceredigion) on 21st, and Strumble on 13th, 18th and 23rd.

A MELODIOUS WARBLER was at Strumble on 2nd and on Skokholm on 2-5th. A BARRED WARBLER was on Ramsay on 14th. A COMMON ROSEFINCH was on Skokholm on 16-17th and 22-27th. A juvenile ROSY STARLING was in a garden in Capel Seion (Ceredigion) on 21st. RED-BACKED SHRIKES were at St.David’s Head on 10th, Dale on 9-14th, Erddig (Wrexham) on 16th and on Skomer on 20th. A WOODCHAT SHRIKE was at Ynyslas on 24-25th. A Hoopoe was at Worms Head (Gower) on 2nd and New Quay (Ceredigion) on 4th. A BEE-EATER was over Burry Port (Carmarthen) on 30th.

Wrynecks were at Rumney Great Wharf (Glamorgan) on 5th, St.David’s Head on 7th, Cilan Head (Caernarfon) 12th, Skokholm 3-12th and Martin’s Haven (Pembrokeshire) on 7-12th, in Cardiff on 18th, Laugharne (Pembrokeshire) on 19thand Rhoscrowther (Pembrokeshire) on 29th. An ORTOLAN BUNTING was at Dale on 30th. The resident Glaucous Gull remained at Llanddulas (Denbighshire) from 2nd -20th.
